DOE’s multi-sectoral dialogue on Energy and Climate Change to kickoff in Iloilo City
THE DEPARTMENT of Energy (DOE), together with the National Electrification Administration (NEA), National Power Corporation (NPC), National Transmission Corp. (TransCo), Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) and Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM), will kickoff the Multi-Sectoral Dialogue on Energy and Climate Change in Iloilo City on June 5.
According to Energy Secretary Angelo T. Reyes, “The energy summit has brought to light challenges facing the energy sector such as the need for additional generating capacity to meet growing energy demand and the imperative of attaining energy independence. As such, the multi-sectoral discussion is aimed at enhancing dialogue and consultation with electric cooperatives and other local energy stakeholders to obtain firsthand information on issues and concerns facing the regions.”
On June 5, Reyes and Administrator Edita S. Bueno will meet with Region VI’s electric cooperatives (ECs) at the Iloilo 1 Electric Cooperative, Inc. office in Tigbauan to dialogue and discuss the operational status of the region’s ECs. Reyes and Bueno will also award a loan to the Central Negros Electric Cooperative, the Guimaras Electric Cooperative and subsidies to the Antique Electric Cooperative (ANTECO) and the Capiz Electric Cooperative.
On the same day, Reyes will hold a dialogue with Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo regarding government initiatives to address the increasing power demand in the region such as the implementation of the Timbahan hydropower project in Madalag, Aklan and the hydroelectric project in Libacao, Aklan.
hE is also scheduled to attend the launching of the Villasiga and Guiamon-San Ramon Mini Hydro Projects at the ANTECO site and grant a license to the Sun West Water and Electric Company, Inc. to construct and operate a mini-hydro facility in Antique with an 8MW generating capacity. All of its generated output will be sold directly to ANTECO. The Sun West facility will stabilize the electricity supply and provide employment in the area as well as reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuel.
On June 6, the multi-sectoral dialogue on energy and climate change will be held at the Sarabia Manor Hotel where specialists will address participants and local stakeholders on climate change and the situation in the energy sector. After this plenary session, participants will break into sectoral workshop groups to arrive at a common understanding of the energy issues facing the region and to come up with solutions to resolve these issues.
The multi-sectoral dialogue is also an information and educational campaign which seeks to create awareness among Filipinos on the issue of climate change, its deadly effects on the country and the need to include climate change in assessing energy options and in the regions’ development plans.
