Antique declared coal-fired plant free
ANTIQUE Gov. Salvacion Perez yesterday said no coal-fired power plant would be built in the province as its contribution to mitigating the impact of climate change.
Antique was visited for the first time by the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior Tuesday as part of its “Quit Coal, Save the Climate” Southeast Asia tour.
Albay has also declared the province a coal-free zone upon the arrival of Rainbow Warrior there in May.
Perez, who chairs the Regional Development Committee for Western Visayas, has proposed that governors of the region make it a model for renewable energy development and reject polluting coal-fired power plants.
Von Hernandez, Executive Director of Greenpeace Southeast Asia, said Perez is “setting a historic precedence with the regional renewable energy development model which can be replicated by other regions in the country.”
Hernandez said real energy security and independence can be achieved through decentralized energy systems powered by renewable energy from the sun, wind, geothermal and modern biomass.
Renewable energy is starting to gain momentum in the Philippines following the passage of the Renewable Energy Bill by the Lower House.
